Conference on Sustainable School Design for East Africa, 2-3 July 2024

With this conference, we want to raise awareness on designing schools that are community-centered, better adapted to the climate, more energy- and cost-efficient and durable with low maintenance. The conference will serve as a platform for experts, educationalists, designers, consultants, policymakers, academia, development partners and all other stakeholders to converge and explore innovative approaches. With the intention to shape the future of education infrastructure in the region, build on a community of practice and allow for the dissemination of best practices and lessons learned.

Over the course of two days, the conference will feature engaging keynote addresses, insightful panel discussions, interactive breakout sessions, and networking opportunities. Allowing room to explore topics such as

  • Responding to current and future challenges for schools

  • Exploring innovative construction concepts, local materials, designs and learning methods

  • Master planning and landscape design 

  • Equitable access

  • Renewable energy and other technologies

  • Maintenance and finances

  • Community-based and participatory processes in building schools

  • Architectural education

All are geared towards more sustainable interventions in social, economic and environmental aspects.

Some plenary sessions will be organized online. Registration is mandatory for access to these sessions.
